Military Uniforms
There was a variety of uniforms worn during the War of 1812 years. It is usually easy to spot the British and American Infantry, but confusion begins when there is green, white, and often black fringed uniforms on both sides. These are just some of the units which would be seen in the Upper Canada area.
Officers can be spotted by the gold and silver epilettes on their shoulders. As a general rule on both sides, lower ranking officers will wear one on one shoulder, and higher ranking officers will have epilettes on both shoulders. The colour will vary with the unit. If you see an officer, just ask. They will be happy to explain. In most reenacting groups, officer ranks are decided by the unit. In Croghan's Company, we elect our officer, sergeant and corporal, mostly based on who is willing to take on the responsibility.
Because our unit portrays Americans, we will begin with the U.S. Forces, followed by the British. We'll also show uniforms worn by the militia and other units. Click on the photo for more information.
If there are uniforms that should be included, please contact us and we'll research and add them.
